my friend said he is trying to gift me a sub, but it hasnt gone through and he hasnt gotten any confirmation or anything

if he was charged the payment is probably pending and will automatically refund within 7 days
make a support ticket about your issue tho
 
he would have received a receipt in his e-mail if the payment was successful. This charge you're talking about most likely is a temporary holding charge which will automatically reverse when a payment fails.
